Honoring Your Commitments and Having an Intended Result
Taking this process on with a full out commitment to dialing up our awareness to what makes us tick and how our relationships with others are impacted will result in a never ending series of insights into what life is and can be all about. Keeping before us the perpetual question of what principles really make life work in an optimal way will open up doors that we did not know existed.
Your commitment to the process as opposed to simply wanting it to happen will make the difference. In life, there is no connection between what we want and what we get. Look around you and notice how many people want things. If you were to ask an audience of 10,000 people if they wanted to be wealthy, you would get a pretty unanimous response. But although these people want wealth, most will never attain it. The world, you see, does not care what we want.
In contrast, however, there is a connection between what we experience and what we are COMMITTED to. Commitment is that do what ever it takes quality that keeps our eye on the prize.
With commitment there is no turning back. Your commitment will open up new possibilities that would not reveal themselves to someone with less at stake.
Commitment means doing what ever it takes to find a way to succeed. Contrast this to how most people approach tackling a new endeavor. For most, entering into a decision usually shows up like something they are willing to do as long as it’s convenient. The problem with such an orientation to entering into a decision out of convenience instead of out of a commitment to make it work, becomes apparent as soon as problems arise . With the inevitable appearance on the scene of problems, the path of least resistance is usually to follow your feelings and again do what appears to be most convenient. This is usually some form of quitting. This explains why most people do not get what they want but instead get what they are committed to—which is usually their comfort.
To break out of this self-sabotaging pattern, it is essential to return yourself to your commitment.
So, how do you do this you may ask.
The answer lies in your ability to continually remain present to your commitment and consciously ,in the moment ,return yourself to it as life forces you to choose between honoring your commitment to yourself or honoring your feelings.
The key to succeeding in any endeavor is to be clear about what it is that you have at stake and what it is that you are actually committed to doing. Then do it anyway, whether you feel like doing it or not.
As you train yourself to develop the muscle of honoring your commitments to yourself, your life will take on a new direction as you advance toward your goals on purpose. Successful people are those people willing to do what unsuccessful people are unwilling to do.
One way to begin on this path of honoring your commitments is to start living deliberately. Each day and for each idea, situation, or relationship you take on, ask yourself, “What is my intended result for this issue?” Going into a situation with a clear intent and definite purpose will guarantee that you are less likely to become distracted and lose your way.
EXERCISING YOUR COMMITMENT MUSCLES
- List at least one thing you want in the following areas:
- Your relationships
- Your health
- Your finances
- Your career
- What definitive action steps are you willing to commit to in order to achieve them?
- In your journal daily record your intended results for the day in each area. Specify an action you will take out of your commitment to bring you closer to your goal for each of the above areas.
