Celebrity Bodies Built by David Kirsch

BOYT: What was the motivation to pursue a career in health and fitness?

David Kirsch: Growing up, I was exposed to fitness but I really didn’t embrace it until my early 20s. I began running in college to keep myself sane, and began working out rigorously while in law school.

BOYT: In a society where the media puts so much emphasis on being very thin to be considered fit, how do you encourage your clients to focus on health and wellness verses weight and appearance?

David Kirsch: Health and wellness are my primary focus; I discourage my clients from using scales. I only use a scale to do the initial consultation and assessment; otherwise, I greatly discourage them. After that initial meeting, the barometer for one’s physical wellness is their percentage of body fat and how their cardiovascular health improves as their workouts progress.

BOYT: Do you find a link between emotional stress and depression and an unhealthy lifestyle?

David Kirsch: Absolutely, my first book titled “Sound Mind, Sound Body” discusses this. The premise of the book is that before one goes to change their physical wellness and physical appearance, they really need to think about their mental wellness and mindset. It’s very important that the mind and body synergistically work well together. Focusing only on your body and not the wellness of your mind will prevent you from achieving total wellness.

BOYT: Are there common traits or characteristics you see in physically fit and emotionally sound clients?

David Kirsch: The number one quality that I see is a healthy balance of physical, emotional and spiritual. It’s very important to have synergy in all areas of your life and be able to recognize when there is an area that needs fine tuning.

BOYT: Being in the business as a personal trainer you give so much of yourself to your clients. How do you recharge and rejuvenate?

David Kirsch: I get up every morning at 4:30 a.m. regardless of what happens the night before, and start my day with exercise. Regardless of how tired I feel when the alarm sounds, I feel alive and energized within 45 minutes. I’m also a single parent with twin 8-month-old daughters. It’s very important for me as a parent to maintain my physical and mental wellness, both for myself and for them. If I don’t have my daily routine, I can’t be at the top of my game for them.

BOYT: How do you keep your clients passionate and motivated day after day?

David Kirsch: The fire and drive comes from within and I find that after clients have worked with me for a few weeks, they begin to find their groove, start to feel better, and have increased energy. They perform better at home, in the office, in bed, and in every other aspect of their lives. When you feel good about yourself it positively impacts everything. We eat better, sleep better, we perform optimally in life. Once a person gets that feeling, that buzz, they don’t want to lose it. People want that euphoric feeling and it keeps them motivated to continue.

BOYT: Is there a product or supplement that you absolutely love?

David Kirsch: Thermobubbles from my personal line is a best-seller, it’s a crazy addicting product and one of my favorites. It’s packed with B12 and chromium picolinate, and green and white tea. It’s an excellent source of clean energy, a fat burner, appetite suppressant – all naturally. For people who need an energy boost, Thermobubbles is a great product. I love Ageless Defense, it’s a capsule that offers Alpha-lipoic acid, L-carnosine and free-radical defense. It’s great particularly as men and women age.

I created these products for women who don’t like supplements and pills and don’t want to get huge muscle mass like a bodybuilder. The products are smart nutrients that give you energy, curb your appetite, and offer meal replacement options.

BOYT: With very hectic schedules, it’s often difficult to find time in the day to workout. If a woman had one hour each day to commit to exercise, what is the best use of the hour?

David Kirsch: If you have a limited amount of time, I encourage you to get a little bit of everything in; maybe one of my express workouts or a 10-15 minute “mini circuit”. High-intensity cardio first thing in the morning is a great way to start your day.

BOYT: What qualities should women look for in a personal trainer?

David Kirsch: That is the million-dollar question. First and foremost, you need to connect with the person and meet face to face. You need to make sure the person is listening to you, understands what you hope to accomplish, and helps you set reasonable goals. Ensure the trainer is dependable, honest, and passionate about what he or she does. Educated, motivating, and empowering are also very important qualities to look for in someone.

BOYT: Is there a food that you suggest all women begin to incorporate in their daily diet?

David Kirsch: Almonds, Blueberries, and Quinoa.

BOYT: Is there a person you admire in your industry?

David Kirsch: Jack Lalanne; he is one of the best. I can only be so lucky to have the lifespan, the career, and to reach as many people as he’s reached over the years. He’s in his 90s and is still wearing his purple unitard. Harley Pasternak is an amazing trainer with a great reputation. Gunnar Peterson is also wonderful. I respect and admire them both.

BOYT: Lastly, please tell us something that others may be surprised to know about you?

David Kirsch: I’m a big foodie and I’m a sucker for a really good bread basket. Good food and good dessert, I love. I workout everyday, so I enjoy everything in moderation.
